Day 1

Kenny the postman has been delivering mail on Whistle Lane for seventeen years. With his ancient grey duffle bag trailing by his side and his matching grey fur dirty and unkept. Kenny has never had a break; he delivers mail every day, even on Christmas. But this Christmas season was going to be his first break. Kenny had been looking forward to this moment and it was here at last. Now for the final round of mail: some flyers for what seems to be a play. Kenny picked one out from the stack and it read ‘ The Twelve Days of Christmas, in Summer ’. Intrigued, Kenny read on, ‘ Now hosting auditions for the role of Santa Claus .’ Kenny had never acted before; he never had any time. But now, he was finally free. “Hey Parker!” he calls out. The rickety door creaks open, barely held on by its rusty hinges. Parker waddles out, his brown fur doused in sweat, his white singlet stained brown.

“Yo, Kenny, my man. What’s up?” he calls.

“I’m finally on my break! Seventeen years without a single day off, even on public holidays, weekends, and special occasions - but I’m finally done!” Kenny’s smile beams from ear to ear, which is quite the achievement for a koala.

“Good job dog, I’ve been busy too,” Parker mumbles, his yellow coffee-stained bill, glinting in the red afternoon sun.

“Parker, all you do is sit around all day and mess with computers! Tell me what have you even achieved?” he questions with a hint of anger in his voice.

“I’m a hacker. It’s what I do, man. Look, I get that you might not think I do much, but I’ve got a big project on the way.” he argues back.

“Well so do I! Today I delivered a flyer in the mail about a play which needs someone to star as Santa Claus. Why not give it a try? I’ll spend all afternoon practicing my lines.” And so, he did. Sitting by the warm fire, he practiced as the possums clawed on the roof and the floorboards creaked with age. Tomorrow was the audition, and Kenny was going to make it count.

5

Day 2

Kenny woke startled, forgetting that he had set his alarm the night before. The glorious golden sun greeted his gloomy gaze. A distant chirp of a kookaburra brought him back to reality. He remembered now - today was the audition. The door creaked open once more, still attached to the two rusty hinges. Kenny bounded down the stairs. Today he feels like he could jump to the sky, not having to lug his mail-stuffed bag along with him. It being early, the scent of freshly cut grass is rampant throughout the streets as the cars had not yet come out to pollute the air. Kenny whistled as he entered the grocery store, greeting the workers and tossing coin to the guide dogs. “Thanks for your donation,” one said in a gruff voice. Today is a good day. The audition went well, but he didn’t get the part. Turns out today was not a good day. The magpies who ran the auditions were kind, but didn’t think that Kenny really understood the meaning of Christmas. They told him to come back once he really understood what Christmas was. What did that even mean? Kenny walked home. The ugly calls of seagulls echoed throughout the street. The scent of cut grass was gone, all that remained was gasoline. The grocery store workers looked disgruntled - fed up with their jobs. The guide dogs looked tired, no longer bothering to ask for a donation. The door creaked open, now only with one rusty hinge left attached. Parker greeted him, saw his somber expression and knew what had happened. Kenny arrived at the community hall where the auditions were taking place. All his practice had led up to this moment, he had this in the bag...or so he thought.

“I didn’t get the part, Parker. They said I didn’t know what Christmas is truly about.” Kenny said glumly.

“Well, you know that project I’ve been working on?” Parker asked.

“Yeah, what about it?” Kenny replied, confused how this had anything to do with his failed audition.

6

“I’ll show you. Come with me,” Parker said as he walked into his room. A tarp was draped over something, a small humming noise coming from underneath. Parker pulled the tarp off, revealing a device with a glass chamber in the center. Screens and lights turned on and the humming grew louder. “This, is a teleporter. We can use it to help you understand Christmas, from all around Australia! From the cold peaks of Tasmania, to the arid flats of central Australia – we can go anywhere!” Parker said with pride. “This is amazing! We’ll meet people from all around the country and ask them what they believe Christmas is! Then, I can go get the part!” Kenny triumphantly declared as he hopped into the central glass chamber.

Parker lifted the glass casing over the red button, “3... 2... 1.” Parker hopped in and a white light surrounded them.

Day 3 (Family/Friends)

‘WHOMP.’

Water sprayed through the wooden doors, almost like a flood. Although it was only a thin layer, it still crept through the cracks. It wouldn’t ruin the machine, but it’d be sure to damage the timber floors. Kenny reached for the door and more water poured in. Sunlight burst through the window cracks, blinding Kenny, sending him stumbling backwards.

“Platty P.! Your invention worked!” he exclaimed.

He couldn’t see where Parker had landed, but he was sure that he was fine. The teleportation felt as if he was on a plane ride, only going at superspeed, which made his fur stand up on end. Then, out of nowhere, a breeze blew through the house, getting stronger and stronger. To regain his balance, Kenny grasped the kitchen sink. From the balcony, Parker called to him, dazzled by the waterfall’s shimmering goodness. Every drop of water that fell from the stream was beautiful. Kenny arrived to meet Parker up top. Kenny waded into the water using his little paws. To his left, he saw tiny sequins dazzling in the depths of the lake. He stretched out his hands to grab one, but it slipped away. They were little rainbow fish! “Platty, look that that!” Kenny said as he pointed to the hundreds of little heads that followed one another. They popped up in a wave, and their scales sparkled with the sun's beams as they moved in unison, creating one beautiful show. They didn’t stop there. They started dancing and swimming, creating a stunning performance. They all worked perfectly together, with not one out “Wow, Platty P.! Look at that view! Come on, let’s get closer!” Kenny said as he ran downstairs and out the shack, pulling Parker along with him.

8

of line. Just when Kenny thought it couldn’t get any better, the group finished with a jump. It was like they were cheerleaders! When they finally stopped, Kenny and Parker were speechless - eyes wide from wonder.

“How could they all get along so well and perform something like that?” said Parker in wonder.

The fish introduced themselves - they were all family; Randy, Ron and Ruby told Kenny that they spent every weekend practicing, as it helps them bond.

“We must practice together, or else Stevie the Snapping turtle would eat us up for lunch!”

Kenny laughed at that remark. Randy said, “We must also do it for our safety, but it’s also so much fun – even though we’re family, we become best friends.”

Kenny was curious, “Do you all stay together for Christmas?”

“Absolutely! Family and friends are the most important part about Christmas time. Ron and Ruby are always here for me, and so I am always here for them. We are one, because without each other, we’re vulnerable.” Randy was quite proud of his response, and him, Ron and Ruby all shared a hug before dipping their heads back under the water grab another breath. Kenny dove into the basin and swam amongst the fish. Parker rushed towards the edge of the waterfall, admiring the bubbly , frothy whiteness of where the stream met the lake. He captured a photo of Kenny floating on his back while Randy, Ron and Ruby flipped through the waterfall. As the sun set against the beautiful falls, Kenny and Parker dried off their wet fur and plodded back into the house.

“Off to the next place. I wonder where we will go!”

Day 4 (Gratefulness)

‘WHOMP.’

BOOM. Kenny jumped, scared by the loud noise. He ran to the window, and the water had gone. It was hot. Not humid, but a really dry heat. Kenny’s mouth was bone dry so he rushed to the kitchen and gulped down a whole glass of water! He opened the front door and saw Parker standing there, surrounded by never-ending land, with nothing else in sight. There was absolutely nothing ...

“WHERE ARE WE, PLATTY P?” Kenny yelled across the sand.

His bare feet burned as he stepped outside. The ground was scorching hot. From the distance he could see a dingo. He whistled, and called the dog. It did as Kenny had expected, and trotted over. Little did Kenny know that the dingo was hungry and deprived of food. The golden-furred dingo almost couldn’t be seen against the yellow sand. Its dark- brown eyes stared Parker down, as he smacked his lips and crouched low to the ground. Parker felt uneasy so he slowly backed towards the house.

“PLATTY P., RUN!” Kenny screamed at the top of his lungs. Just like that, the dingo took off and chased after him!

“P-p-please! Don’t eat us! H-Have this instead!” they pleaded as they held out a bowl of leftover baked beans.

The dingo relaxed and slurped up the sticky, yummy soup. He licked his lips and smiled showing his rotten canines.

Finally, he introduced himself “Hi I’m Dudley the Dingo. Thank you so much for this meal - I haven’t eaten all week. Anyways, what is a koala and platypus doing so far out in the desert?”

10

Parker explained how he was on a journey to find the true meaning about Christmas.

“Oh man! Well, if living with almost nothing has taught me anything, it is to appreciate the little things and to be grateful for everything that you receive. Again, thank you for that baked bean soup – it was amazing!” he said as he rubbed his bloated belly.

“You better go now or else you’ll dry up into a crisp! But please come back again!”

Kenny and Parker waved from the porch as they disappeared once again.

11

Day 5 (Peace)

‘WHOMP.’

Water flew through the cracked windows and floorboards hitting Parker in the face.

“Oh no, not again!” Kenny exclaimed. The whole house swayed from side to side ,and they lost their balance, hitting each other in the head.

“I think I’m going to be sick,” Kenny proclaimed.

“Water!” Kenny said with excitement as he quickly rose to his feet. He ran to the front door and gasped as if he had seen a ghost.

“Platty P! We’re at the Great Barrier Reef, I’ve always wanted to come here!” At the speed of light , he dove into the water, splashing around like a kid in a water park. He laid on his back and glided through the water with ease. Parker stumbled to the door and was taken aback by the view. “Crikey! Would you look at that. It’s b-beautiful!” Parker sputtered. The water glistened in the sunshine, with the bright and colourful sea life down below. He dropped down on to his knees to get a closer look at the coral down below, but was startled as a large marine animal swam underneath the house. He was so amazed that he lost his balance and fell into the water.

“Kenny!” Parker shouted, “Did you see that? Something big is under the house!”

Kenny swam swiftly towards the house to get a better look.

“Where is it? I don’t see anything but small schools of fish,” Kenny said, sticking his head under the water.

A soft call, coming from the distance began to grow louder.

12

“It’s coming towards me!” Kenny said shakily.

A strange head popped out of the water. It was an animal that was unfamiliar to the boys.

“You’re a long way from home. I’m Damo the dugong. Who are you?” he said flatly.

“I’m Kenny and this is Platty P, we’re looking for answers,” Kenny said, looking relieved that this wouldn’t be another wild chase.

“Relax bro, you look so stressed. I can help you,” Damo slurred.

“Well, what does Christmas mean to you?” Kenny asked.

“Christmas is a time to relax, to zone out. A time for peace,” Damo said tranquilly.

“I’d love time to relax but now is not the time! We have to go – we still have so many places to see! Thank you for your help, Damo! Come on Platty!” Kenny hopped out of the water, rushing into the house.

Parker followed him, when he felt a huge splash from behind.

“My man, I hope you find what you’re looking for,” said Damo.

“Thank you. I’ll see you soon,” Kenny said as he winked.

“Hurry up and get in the house Platty! We’re taking off!” Parker shouted.

13

Day 6 (Forgiveness)

‘WHOMP.’

The floorboards became wet beneath Kenny and Parker’s feet. There were tree branches sticking through the cracked windows of the house. They stepped outside and the heat instantly hit their skin.

“Ew, why is it so humid!” Parker groaned.

“It’s a rainforest, what do you expect” Kenny replied.

“So, this is what it looks like?” Kenny said curiously.

“Kenny look, what’s that?” said Parker as he points to a prickly ball in the corner near a large boulder. They carefully approaching the frightened animal, Kenny poked the Echidna with a stick.

In a soft voice, Kenny said, “Hi, I’m Kenny the Koala and this is Parker the Platypus, what’s your name?”

The Echidna looked up, “I- I’m Ellie,” she hesitantly replied.

Ellie extended her arm for a handshake, as Kenny put out his hand Ellie’s spikes pinched his skin and started to bleed.

“Ouch!” exclaimed Kenny.

Jumping back, Ellie began to tear up and apologized profusely.

With a warm smile “Don’t worry! It’s okay!” Kenny bent down and looked into Ellie’s eyes and firmly remarked.

Warming up to their presence, Ellie asked what they were doing in the rainforest.

14

“Trying to see what the meaning of Christmas is,” answered Kenny, “what does Christmas mean to you?”

“The meaning of Christmas to me is just being thankful for forgiveness and being forgiving.” said Ellie with a genuine smile, appearing across her face.

“How?” questioned Parker.

“Well, because of my spikes on my back I always accidentally hurt someone I care about, but they forgive me, and I'm thankful that they understand and still forgive me.” happily replied.

“Okay, thank you!” Kenny and Parker said in unison, while starting to walk back to the house.

“Well, that was an interesting meaning of Christmas, read for the next place?” commented Kenny standing in the damp house.

“Yep!” cried Parker.

15

Day 7 (Generosity)

‘WHOMP.’

Streaks of light flooded the room. Flashing colours filled the empty holes scattered on the wall. Mist silently crept through the floorboards as whirling sirens pierced the silence.

“AH!! What’s that sound terrible sound!” Kenny exclaimed. Parker didn’t reply, but simply waddled closer to Kenny.

CLICK, CLICK, CLICK… there was an echo in the distance.

“Oh no, wh-wh-where did you take us now Platty P.” Kenny stuttered as he gripped onto Parker tightly.

CLICK, CLICK, CLICK… the sound intensifies. The door swung open and exposed the source of the clattering. It was footsteps, thousands of footsteps. Different animals scurried past the house busily trying to get to work on time.

Parker cried “I know where we are Kenny, we are in the city! I think my cousin lives here.”

The city was so grand, not anything Kenny had ever imagined- immense buildings in systematic patterns. The sunlight was barely finding its way through the smog-filled sky.

“OOOOH WHAT DO WE HAVE HERE!” an Ibis announced as he glided onto the porch.

“YEWWWWWW, I CAN TELL Y'ALL AREN’T FROM AROUND HERE,” the other chuckled as he floated down

16

“Hello folks, my name is Kenny, and this is Platty P. We’re on an adventure to find out what Christmas actually means. You wouldn’t happen to know, would you?”

Ivan the Ibis quickly blurted out, “WELL OF COURSE I DO! CHRISTMAS IS MY FAVOURITE TIME OF THE YEAR WHERE I CAN GET SO MUCH FOOD. TO ME, CHRISTMAS IS ALL ABOUT GIVING. YOU SEE EVER SINCE I WAS A YOUNG IBY, MY MOTHER ALWAYS SAID THAT WE MUST BE GENEROUS. THE HUMANS IN THE CITY ALWAYS LEAVE OUT THEIR LEFTOVERS FOR US. THEY ARE SO KIND TO US!!!” What Ivan said made perfect sense to Kenny. Even though he had never met a human in real life before, he had heard that they very giving and big-hearted. If Kenny ever meets one, he will express to them how thankful he is that they always give their leftovers to the animals of the city, such as his new friend Ivan the Ibis.

“All this talk about food is making me hungry,” groaned Parker.

“All right then you sook,” Kenny teased “we better be going but thank you for teaching us about what Christmas means to you!”

“NO WORRIES MATE,” Ivan cheered as he flew off with his buddy.

“Where to next Platty P.?”

17

Day 8 (Acceptance)

‘WHOMP.’

The house came to a slow stop, instead of the usual clunk to the ground.

“That’s weird,” said Parker, “maybe there’s a problem with the system.”

“Um, Platty P. I don’t think the system is faulty, I think the location is...” Kenny said as he peered out of the window.

Parker trotted over to where Kenny was perched and looked out to see that the house was floating right above a swamp!

“Right. Well, one of us is going to have to go down there, and, you know, I’m just the tech guy...” Parker shuffled his feet and looked up at Kenny expectantly.

Kenny rolled his eyes and crawled out of the window, and onto a tree branch hanging nearby. Thankful for his climbing skills, he carefully made his way down the length of the tree, eager to see what awaited below.

“Kenny!! WATCH OUT!! SNAKE!!”

Kenny stopped dead in his tracks and glanced down at his feet to see a scaly snake slowly sneaking towards him.

“Sssalutionsss my dear friend, my name is Ssstella the sssnake... what bringsss you here to thisss part of the ssswamp?” Stella hissed.

Kenny stared at Stella in astonishment, unsure of what to say. Shivers travelled down his spine as Stella’s tail whipped around the tree, missing his button nose by centimeters.

“Uhhh...well... I’m on a mission.”

18

“What sssort of missssion?” hissed the snake as she coiled around the branch.

“I’m trying to find out what Christmas really means. I don’t suppose you could help me though.”

“Of courssse I can! To me, it isss important at Chrissstmasss to be accepting of everyone, no matter what they look like.”

Kenny stared down at the water underneath, feeling guilty about his first reactions to Stella.

“Itsss okay, I’m usssed to it. That’sss how I learnt to be ressspecting of other people and acknowledge that everyone isss dissstinct in their own ssspecial way! The world would be boring if everyone wasss the sssame, that’sss why it’sss important to be different”

“Thank you for your wisdom, Stella - and sorry for how I acted before. You’re wonderful, and you’ve helped me so much on the journey! Until we meet again.”

Kenny outstretched his paw and was met by Stella’s tail – which he found to be surprisingly soft! He bid her farewell and ascended back up to the floating house.

As he hauled himself back into the window, he found Parker in the corner, curled up in a blanket.

“Y-you took forever! A-are you okay?” he shivered and pulled the blanket over his head, with only his bill sticking out.

“I’m fine! She was wonderfully nice!” he gave Parker a pat on the back and skipped over to the collection of computer screens.

“Never judge on first impressions, Platty P., Never,” he said as he lifted the glass case that the button was sitting in.

19

Day 9 (Hope)

‘WHOMP.’

With a soft thud, the house landed onto the surface below. Sand crept through the cracks of the old wooden floorboards, and a gust of hot wind blew the front door open. Kenny heard the gentle crash of waves close by - they must be near the beach! With a rush of excitement, he ran out of the old front door onto the hot sand below – they weren’t near the beach, they were on the beach! Kenny sprinted down to the water's edge and he took in the beautiful surroundings. But, as he looked around, he noticed that there was no one in sight to help him learn about Christmas. It was then that Kenny noticed slight movement further up the shore, near the house. As he looked closer, a tiny green head poked out of the sand. Suddenly, hundreds of little sea turtles burst through, making their way up from their cozy nests. Kenny watched in amazement as the tiny babies scuttered past him to the ocean – how did they know exactly where to go? He had so many questions but didn’t know who to ask – he must try and find somebody who can help him!

He bent down onto his fluffy little knees and introduced himself to the new babies:

“Hello!” he said shyly, not sure whether he would get an answer.

“Hi there!” said one little turtle, looking up at him with her huge eyes, “What’s your name?”

“Oh, um, I’m Kenny. Kenny the Koala” he said, gathering more confidence as he spoke.

“Nice to meet you, Kenny. I’m Tilly – Tilly the Turtle!” she smiled and stretched her flipper out to greet him. “What brings you here Kenny?”

20

“Well, I’m trying to find out what the meaning of Christmas is – do you think you could help me? What does it mean to you?”

“Well, to me, Christmas is all about hope. The journey from our nests to the ocean can be really scary, but as long as we hope for the best and keep our spirits high, nothing bad can happen! Just remember to have faith, and you’ll be okay!”

With that, Tilly waved her flipper goodbye and hopped down to the water's edge and swam into the great big ocean.

“Thanks, Tilly! Good luck!” Kenny called as he skipped back up to the house.

“Let’s go Platty P.! Off to the next adventure!

21

Day 10 (Love)

‘WHOMP.’

Crunch.

Something broke underneath the house as they landed. A huge hole opened in the old floorboards, and a giant, prickly, cactus stood through the hole. Kenny and Parker stepped back in shock, unsure of what to do next.

A strong, deep voice startled them out of their right minds, shouting “Crickey mate, you gave me a bloody good scare!”

The voice came from Kurt, a monstrous red kangaroo, and the leader of his mob. He was tall and fierce and loved his family more than anything else.

Kenny and Parker stepped out into the harsh, gold sunlight and were immediately surrounded by flies. They looked around and saw the large mob of kangaroos lying in the shade of Uluru, the massive rock in the middle of the desert. Kenny wanted to ask them all one question:

“I am very sorry for interrupting you on this beautiful day at Uluru, but may I please ask you one question?”

Kurt's daughter, Kimberly spoke in a gentle voice, and said, “We haven't had this much excitement around here for a long time, it’s so exciting! Ask away.”

“What does Christmas mean to you?” asked Kenny

22

“Well, to me, Christmas means showing love and care for one another. Because there are so many of us in this family, we have to stick up for each other and show how much we love them every day. Christmas is a great time to represent this, so we give each other hand made gifts, to show our appreciation and love.” said Kimberly Kenny said “Wow, I didn’t know this about kangaroos, I’m so fortunate to have heard this. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and thank you so much for your help! I wish I could stay here longer, but we have to get back home. Come on Platty P., off we go!”

23

Day 11

‘WHOMP.’

The house lands softly back in its place at Whistle Lane. Confident in knowing what Christmas means, Kenny decided to go audition for the play again. When he returned to the audition, the Director asked him to perform his piece. He nailed it! Then, the Director asked the one question he was eager to answer.

“What does Christmas mean to you, Kenny?” asked the Director.

“Christmas to me is about family and friends, as without them Christmas wouldn’t even exist! They’ll always stick by you, even through the toughest of times. You also need to be grateful for what you have - it’s a time to relax and zone out with the people who mean the most to you. Be thankful and forgiving to people for things they may have done, and give back to people who give a lot to you. You should accept people, no matter their looks, as everyone is different and special. Having hope is also very important, as if you have faith, you can make it through anything. Lastly, you must be loving and caring.” said Kenny

The director stared in awe. He was amazed at how much he had grown as a person.

“Amazing answer Kenny! The part is yours!” replied the Director

Jumping with joy, Kenny squealed and danced around. But, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Cody the Croc - he looked sad, and walking away from the stage, slumped over. Feeling bad, Kenny ran over to Croc.

“Hey Croc, are you alright?” asked Kenny.

“Yeah, I’m just a bit sad,” replied Croc “You deserve the role, I just think it would’ve been really cool.”

“I know you’re a great actor, so I think you deserve this role,” said Kenny.

“Really?” questioned Croc

“Yes! You can have my spot - I know the true meaning of Christmas, and that’s all I really need. This is your Christmas gift from me,” replied Kenny.

24

Day 12

Kenny waited eagerly for his guests to arrive.

“Do you reckon they are going to come to Platty P.?”

“I’m not sure Kenny,” replied Parker, barely fazed.

Kenny’s mind began circling “Yes, they were friends, but will they really come and support me when we have only met once? And what if they have their own families and don’t think that I’m worthy of their time on Christmas day?” The doorbell rang, and Kenny crossed his fingers (and toes) that it was his friends. He checked the door and to his surprise, he saw Dudley the dingo - alone. Out of everyone he was expecting Dingo the least, but at least he had someone! But then, as he walked outside to greet Dudley, he peered around the corner and saw all of his other friends! Tilly the turtle, Damo the Dugong, you name it! They were all there! Kenny was filled with joy - his hair stuck up around his stomach and he started to get chills. He finally understood the meaning of Christmas and he was happier than he had ever been before. Kenny had set out a special Christmas lunch for all of his friends. Everyone took their places and sat down for their special meal - they devoured every piece of it! He was so glad that the countless hours he had spent in the kitchen had not gone to waste.

To celebrate, Parker set up the camera and took a very special shot. This photo would be cherished and displayed forever.

What a great end to Christmas day!
