Quality of life can be measured in many ways but a vibrant cultural experience can provide real contentment which is the key to happiness. That’s why I have worked so hard to deliver great art and culture events for Gold Coasters – and our visitors – to enjoy! I congratulate the Storyfest Board, for their leadership in this space by providing Storyfest as the Gold Coast’s own literary festival. By reaching out to the whole community, Storyfest demonstrates just how valuable a centre of learning can be to the broader community. It is wonderful integration. Over three days in March – and on many other occasions – Storyfest will engage scores of schools across the city in a celebration of the written word. And there will be plenty of the spoken word, too, as authors and collaborators recount their experiences to audiences in a range of venues, including our Home Of The Arts (HOTA). Getting involved is easy with lots of choices including masterclasses, workshops and guest speaker occasions. Language is how we share meaning

AUTHOR SESSIONS Wednesday 18 to Friday 20 March 2020 WORKSHOPS AND PANELS Interactive writing workshops and panel discussions for children and adults SPECIAL EVENTS Prologue Party, Literary Lunch and the Long Table Dinner EXTENDED PROGRAMME Free community events throughout the Gold Coast AUTHOR BOOK SIGNINGS In the Festival Bookshop Festival Highlights

The 2020 Storyfest programme has something for everyone. An authentic literary event should delight, educate, inspire and, on occasion, confront and leave its audiences re-evaluating societal norms and conventions. Storyfest 2020, does just that. The spread of writers is bound to delight and educate younger readers and inspire them to read fiction, venture into writing in all its forms, and in the process improve their literacy; leading to improved outcomes in life. The ABC’s dynamic and thought-provoking Matt Beard and Carl Smith will throw ethical conundrums to young people to problem solve, through their “Short and Curly” shows; something not to be missed. The festival also caters to adults through writing workshops, external “In-Conversation” sessions, the Literary Lunch with Walkley Award winner, Jess Hill, dinner with acclaimed Australian author, Elliot Perlman, and the Surfing Breakfast on Saturday morning, 14 March on the theme, “Life Lessons from the Ocean”, I encourage the Gold Coast community to find the time to visit the Coast’s most respected and inclusive literary event.

Anna was born in Sydney, but spent most of her childhood surrounded by mountains in Nepal and Tibet while her parents were part of an international community of health professionals. Anna completed a MA in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University in 2015, and now lives in Melbourne with her husband. She works as a bookseller.

Tim Miller is an Australian bestselling children’s author living in Sydney. By day, he is a Marketing Manager, and in his spare time he writes hilarious books for kids of all ages. His first picture book, There is a Monster Under My Bed Who Farts , was an instant hit. He’s now published six picture books, including Dinosaur Dump and Don’t Spew in Your Spacesuit . Among Tim’s most recent publications are two fiction books for emerging readers called Fart Monster and Me: The Birthday Party and Fart Monster and Me: The Class Excursion.

EXTENDED PROGRAMME

ILLUSTRATOR BATTLE THURSDAY 19 MARCH 11.15AM Session 233

Top illustrators square off against each other for the opportunity to claim the prize of being the best illustrator, voted fairly and squarely, by the young audience. The competition will be fierce and there will be only one person left standing at the end; judged by the hard evidence of the objective ‘clappometer’. You will laugh, you will cry and you will be entertained by the virtuosity and imagination and creative flair of the illustrators. Be there and never regret missing an event that will be talked about fondly in the future. All this will hosted by the brilliant Andrew Daddo! Illustrators are: Bruce Whatley, Remy Lai, Stephen Michael King and the Somerset Student Battle Winner.

GUIDE TO LIFE

THURSDAY 19 MARCH 10.15AM Session 222

FRIDAY 20 MARCH 11.15AM Session 333

If you have ever asked yourself how you know whether something is OK or not OK? If you have ever asked yourself about fairness and what is more important; that the people with the best skills get rewarded, or that everyone gets the same chance to succeed. If you have ever questioned the point of school uniforms and asked; “Why would we wear school uniforms, and do they really have a place in schools?” If these and other topical and relevant issues occupy your thinking and conversations, the acclaimed Short & Curly interactive sessions are for you. Carl Smith (presenter) and Dr Matt Beard (ethicist, co-author) will get you thinking and participating and of course coming to unexpected and original conclusions. Their show will delight you and leave you thirsting for more. Short & Curly is a silly but serious ABC podcast, combining adventure, comedy and ethics for kids and families. The team behind the podcast will have some fun and tricky dilemmas to share with you in this special live show. Join ethicist and author Dr Matt Beard , creator and producer Kyla Slaven , and presenter Carl Smith . Adults are welcome, but they better be prepared to squirm. This show is recommended for 8 to 12 year olds however all are welcome!

But where does historical fact intersect with historical fiction? Is there a place for pure imagination when writing about real characters? Employing a well-known event from history, join Joanna Grochowicz and learn about what’s involved in crafting a compelling story that has the potential to entertain and inform.

THURSDAY 19 MARCH 9.30AM TO 11.00AM
