My Santiago
Our Temples
One day,
In the distant future,
Archaeologists will excavate
to considerable excitement -
A site of one of our many temples,
And they will theorise
About the found artefacts.
They will uncover a place
where a faded sign will read;
“Food Court”
With other equally tantalising inscriptions,
Tarnished, faded,
But through the dust reading,
“Mac Dona... “the last three letters lost,
Leaving them to guess what it might have been.
A shrine perhaps for worship?
Or a sacrificial altar,
Where virgins were offered to their gods,
Placating them,
And delivering good fortune, long life, good health?
They will find cavernous concrete - pillared monoliths,
Littered with metal boxes,
Varied colours, shapes, and
with rubber feet,
And try and fathom
the stupidity of this wasted space;
