A IMS OF L ANGUAGE A CQUISITION (G ERMAN )

The aims of MYP Language Acquisition are to enable students to:

 Begin to develop proficiency in an additional language while supporting maintenance of their mother tongue and cultural heritage  Develop a respect for, and understanding of, diverse linguistic and cultural heritage  Develop the student’s communication skills necessary for further language learning, and for study, work and leisure in a range of authentic contexts and for a variety of audiences and purposes  Enable the student to begin to develop multiliteracy skills through the use of a range learning tools, such as multimedia, in the various modes of communication  Enable the student to recognise and use language as a vehicle of thought and self-expression  Enable the student to understand the nature of language and the process of language learning  Offer insight into the cultural characteristics of the communities where the language is spoken  Encourage an awareness and understanding of the perspectives of people from their own and other cultures, leading to involvement and action in their own and other communities  Foster curiosity, inquiry and a lifelong interest in, and enjoyment of, language learning. S EMESTER O NE : Students will investigate how they can improve their understanding of foreign language when listening to and reading passages in German. A range of stimulus with a common theme of leisure (including photo stories, excerpts from German television, magazine articles and emails) will be studied to strengthen students’ comprehension skills. Students will also put this language to good use of their own, as they use it to engage in rehearsed and unrehearsed conversations with their peers and teacher and learn how following simple patterns can help improve their overall accuracy and communication when writing. S EMESTER T WO : Students will be guided as they prepare a presentation about their school experience, in which they will learn how language can be used to engage an audience and to link ideas. In Term Four students will learn a wider range of sentence structures allowing them to make complaints about health. Students will also practise connecting with written and visual texts on topics such as school and health, to read for meaning and identify points of view behind texts. Students will be guided through with exercises to develop their language proficiency in order to communicate in more and more meaningful contexts.
