1901 when Australia was federated. As well as the 90,000 Indo-Chinese people who entered the country, there was the Orderly Departure Program from Vietnam. This program was initiated in 1979, where an emphasis on family reunion from the roughly 2000 people who had arrived from 1976, a year after the war finished in Vietnam. These people who came across by boat were accepted in Darwin on humanitarian grounds. The Vietnamese people who came across with the Orderly Departure Program in 1979 were also joined in the coming years, by 1982, by about 55,000 other Vietnamese refugees, many fleeing the Catholics, ethnic Chinese, and the communist government that had won the war in Vietnam. These impacts were positive, as it encouraged a much more multicultural Australia, giving everyone in the country a much more equal playing field in the acquiring rights and a fair place in society. As you can see from these points, the Vietnam War, although devastating, did have some positive social impacts on Australia, both in the local population, and the increasingly multicultural Australia. On the contrary, there was also negative impacts socially to Australia due to the Vietnam war. To begin with, as comes with every battle or war, many soldiers would come back with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or they would have been impacted by Agent Orange. Many of the soldiers who were suffering from PTSD, once they had returned, started to fall victim to their personal demons, such as depression, alcoholism and in some cases, suicide. As well as this, there were many ongoing effects from the use of Agent Orange in Vietnam on the soldiers and the future generations of their families due to the chemical, with some of the after effects being cancer, birth defects, miscarriages and brain dysfunction within the soldiers and future generations. It took until 1994, almost 20 years after the war had finished, to conclude that Agent Orange was the cause of this in many soldiers. As well as this, on the
