Early Career Teachers The first years as a teacher can be as challenging as they are rewarding. As such, it is important to receive the right support and guidance to develop your skills. At the College, we provide resources and support to help you get used to the classroom and improve your practice as you transition to the
proficient career stage. This support includes:
o fortnightly meetings with early career mentor for the first year of teaching o lesson cover provided to shadow Departmental mentors o guidance and support with portfolio development to progress to full registration with Queensland College of Teachers o access to early teacher professional development and networks o a pedagogical coach
Instructional Coaches Somerset has a performance and development culture. We support teacher collaboration, encourage leadership, value feedback and research, centred on peer observation and the use of video-recorded lessons to develop high impact instructional practices. Jim Knight’s ‘Impact Cycle’, is the platform for our ongoing cycle of professional learning. Our instructional coaching programme provides: o opportunity to continually review and improve your practice o a trained Instructional Coach o opportunities to train as an Instructional Coach
Leadership Development Somerset Leadership Academy (SLA) is our innovative platform that enables the College to bring together a range of leadership development programs from NESLI’s internationally respected curriculum. Corner stones of the Academy are: o an industry-leading approach to developing the leadership capability of all staff throughout the organisation o a logical pathway which allow participants to progress through to Masters level qualifications. o the opportunity to access appropriate developmental programmes to meet the specific needs of staff members Through the Academy staff have access to apply to undertake the following:
Professional Learning Allowance o All staff receive an annual professional learning (PL) allowance of $500, which may accumulate over three-years. Staff can apply to use this allowance for career related PL that would enhance their professional competencies. Professional Development o Access to In-House professional development o Access to quality external professional development, including conferences, throughout Australia o Curriculum and network support through educational bodies such as ISQ and QCAA International Baccalaureate Training o Registration for International Baccalaureate Professional Development workshops – Diploma, Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Primary Years Programme (PYP) o Support for those interested in becoming an IB Educator (Workshop Leader)

Promotional Pathways o The College recognises aspiring leaders through a variety of pathways/positions, from coordinators through to middle and senior leadership. o All teachers can apply to take on greater responsibility through a graded co-curricular payment scheme o Senior Teacher status allows staff to take on substantial projects or responsibilities in an area that significantly contributes to the success of the College
Career Mapping and Mentoring The College recognises the importance and value of career mentoring for our staff. Our mentoring process provides support for the mentee’s development that includes:
o examining professional issues that impact on the mentee o obtaining exposure to new ideas and ways of thinking o advising on developing strengths and overcoming challenges o guiding professional development and career advancement o developing new skills and knowledge
