The gondola cuts a swathe, Rippling eddies of water Colliding with the black walled edges of this Venice, This City of Water, La Dominante! It glides under the Ponte dei Sospiri (this Bridge of Sighs), - So aptly named by Lord Byron - And as the lovers kiss on this gondola, At sunset, Under the bridge, They are assured eternal love! Engaged in Life, in Venice, in each other, in Romance, They contemplate rebirth, Their own private renaissance Of life, of passion, Of a dialogue with another being!
Touched by the serenity of Venezia, By the damp beauty Of this sinking city, By its sad glory, Its sense of living for the day, Futures are put on hold The past consigned…
