A word to the Captains from the Captains before...

Congratulations on becoming the Committees Captains! I hope you are as enthusiastic as we were when we started! Being the Committees Captain is not as hard as some of the other leadership positions, but that doesn’t mean that you should slack off. Committees are a very important part of Somerset as each committee provides a community for each student.

W hat does your position entail

The position of Committees Captain entails managing and making sure all committees are productive in a positive environment. Committees should be having at least 1 big project a semester if it is applicable. If certain committees are having trouble coming up with a project, they can collaborate with other committees (eg: Sustainable Spartans collaborating with Marketing Committee for festivals so ensure products are environmentally friendly). Just make sure the committees are running efficient, happy and that you can provide support to your fellow students.

F ive tips for you as successors

• Make sure you get involved with each committee even if you aren’t in it.

• Be positive and outgoing!

• Make friends with all the committee leaders and committee members.

• When organizing a whole committees’ meeting, make sure to do it in advance.

• Bring treats to whole committee meetings, it encourages everyone to go!

Highlight of our Captaincy The experience in general, I enjoyed every part of it from organizing meetings, to being part of events and being able to help and witness committees collaborating with each other, even talking and discussing ideas with committee leaders was a highlight. Unexpected things that happened during our Captaincy One main unexpected thing that happened during a whole committees meeting was that the school provided delicious food for everyone to enjoy. Another unexpected thing that happened was the chance to be able to host activities for the students that participated in the 40 hour backpack challenge, it was very fun getting every student to spin around blindfolded and having them find each other. Memorable moments with Mr Walker When Mr Walker witnessed the students getting a sugar high at the 40 hour backpack challenge and couldn’t fathom how much energy they could have.

5 things you won ’ t know about M r W alker

• He may seem strict, but he is one of the nicest and kindest teachers at Somerset College

• He is very caring and often checks up on students to see if everything is okay.

• Even though he is a teacher, he will still join in events with the stu- dents and have fun.

• He has great ideas and is very quick at helping you find solutions to problems.

• He can’t have anything with sugar at night, sugar is like caffeine for him.

T he C ommittee highlights in 2018 have been ….. The committee highlights in 2018 have been when the committees collaborated with each other and most of the committees now have their own Schoolbox page.

T hings I’ ll miss most about my C aptaincy

Getting to interact with every committee, seeing what each committee is capable of and just being there to support the committee leaders.

M y advice to you is … Be kind, respectful and understanding. Make sure you manage your time well and set a great example for students as all leaders should. Good luck!
