Year 7 PHE Physical and Health Education Course Outline Aims of Physical Education

The aims of MYP Physical and Health Education are to encourage and enable students to:

 use inquiry to explore Physical and Health Education concepts

 participate effectively in a variety of contexts



understand the value of physical activity



achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle



collaborate and communicate effectively

 build positive relationships and demonstrate social responsibility



reflect on their learning experiences.

Course Description During Semester One, students develop physical skills in juggling, athletics and touch football. They inquire into healthy eating habits and the benefits of developing and maintaining fitness. With an emphasis on juggling, the students incorporate a variety of throwing and catching skills into a collaboratively choreographed sequence. All students will participate in the Senior School Cross Country Carnival and will be assessed against Criterion C. Students will learn the various techniques and skills needed to perform in a number of track and field events in the lead up to the Senior School Athletics Carnival. Touch Football will continue in Semester Two and will be followed by a unit on Ultimate Frisbee. Students will learn the rules of touch football and develop their own creative game-play strategies. In the study of Ultimate Frisbee, students develop a number of throwing and catching skills, as well as learning the responsibilities of self-governed play and the importance of integrity in sport. Students will also learn about water safety, how to perform a variety of rescues and improve their fitness and strokes across a range of distances. In addition to their practical lessons, students will also inquire into how to find a balance between mental and physical health, as well as what it means to be a good sport and how games can be modified.
