C OURSE D ESCRIPTION

The Arts course in Year 7 is divided into two semesters with students studying Music in one semester and Visual Arts in the other semester.

In Arts (Music), students begin by studying the unit ‘The Da Vinci Code’ , which is an inquiry into the different notation systems that allow individuals to communicate through music. During this unit of work, students will develop their music literacy skills through aurally and visually analysing a range of notation systems and identify the elements of music within each. Students will be required to create their own unique system of notation, clearly showing each of the elements of music . They will focus on the impact music can have on different environments. Students will be encouraged to take note of the music they encounter in their daily life, what genres they hear and how it affects them and their environment. Through their findings, students will learn about music genres and their characteristics. The following unit, ‘Big Bangs’ focuses on the changes in music over time and gives students the opportunity to study the main characteristics of music in the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern eras. Students will inquire into the status of modern-day performers and compare their favourite artists to the lives of composers in the past. Students will keep a listening journal and will reflect on their understanding and involvement in classroom activities throughout the unit. Working in groups, students will be required to perform their earlier composition, exploring good performance techniques and the considerations necessary when working with others.
