Incidents like this captured the imagination and gave others the confidence to resist the draft. By 1972, over 14,000 hadn't registered and there were 500 public non-compliers. All of this added up to a country who heavily disagreed with its politics and its decision to go to war, which was similar other countries involved with heavy protest movements in America. As well as this, many churches, such as the protestant church disagreed with the war. The logic for this was that all Christians should always be peacemakers. However, within the churches there was a split of beliefs which led to disruption in the churches, which still held importance in Australia splitting the people and their ideas and who to believe. This would heavily persuade people and change their beliefs and even their politics. As well as this, the impact of Agent Orange and PTSD, caused major ripples within Australia, and heavily impacted the governments choices and what they had to do with the soldiers returning from war. As mentioned previously, many soldiers were effected by PTSD which led to much more dire consequences such as alcoholism and even suicide. Unfortunately for those suffering, the government had no real way to deal with this, other than to pay the soldiers reparations for sending them to war. However this was not enough and the returning soldiers still suffered from these issues and it took until 1994, almost 20 years after the war, for there to be any recognition that Agent Orange was still physically effecting the soldiers and their families. From this it can be seen that there were many negative effects of the Vietnam War on the government of Australia. The Vietnam War, one of the most horrific and inhumane wars of the 20 th century had major impacts on Australia, both socially and politically, with both taking completely different views and being hit from completely different sides. Overall the Vietnam war was an awful war for almost all involved, but especially the soldiers, who still to this day, them and their families are suffering from the outcomes.
