YEAR 11 LITERATURE (QCE) SUBJECT OVERVIEW

LITERATURE is a course of study consisting of four units, completed over two years. Subject matter, learning experiences and assessment increase in complexity from Units 1 and 2 to Units 3 and 4 as students develop greater independence as learners. Only the results for Units 3 and 4 will contribute to ATAR calculations. Across Units 1 and 2, students must study at least four texts. Across Units 3 and 4 students must study at least six texts, selected from the Prescribed Text List. The course focuses on the study of literary texts, developing students as independent, innovative and creative learners and thinkers who appreciate the aesthetic use of language, analyse perspectives, and challenge ideas and interpretations through the analysis and creation of a variety of literary texts. YR 11 COURSE OUTLINE UNIT FOCUS 1. Introduction to Literary Studies

In Unit 1, students will develop an understanding of the ways literary styles and structures shape how texts are received and responded to by readers and audiences, an understanding of key literary terms and concepts, and an appreciation of the ways literary texts are crafted. In Unit 2, students will develop an understanding of the ways literary texts connect with each other. They will study texts that are closely related in terms of genre, theme and/or context. They will compare and contrast the ideas, style and structure of different texts to explore the ways in which texts interact with and build on each other to offer varied representations and perspectives. In Unit 3, students will develop an understanding of the relationship between culture and identity in literary texts. They will consider how texts endorse, challenge or question cultural assumptions, and the power of language to represent ideas, events and people in particular ways.
