Subject Outline Chemistry is the study of matter and of changes in matter. It is often called the “Central Science” as it connects the other sciences to each other. This Chemistry course covers a wide range of topics including the Periodic Table, Chemical Reactions and Bonding, Stoichiometry and an introduction to Organic Chemistry. An emphasis is placed on practical work and the development of investigative, analytical and critical thinking skills. Students will have opportunities to design, implement and analyse investigations of interest to them. As students apply the learned concepts to increasingly complex scenarios, they will develop their critical thinking skills and an appreciation of the role of chemistry in our global environment. Pathways Chemistry helps you to understand the world around you; it enables you to make informed decisions about environmental and technological advances. New breakthroughs in genetics, biochemistry, forensics, and nanotechnology and drug discovery are all driven by chemistry. This course provides a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in chemistry, preparing the way for a smooth transition to Senior Chemistry, and later to many science-based, medical and engineering university courses. MYP Aims for Chemistry The aims of the teaching of Chemistry are to encourage and enable students to:  Understand and appreciate science and its implications  Consider science as a human endeavour with benefits and limitations  Cultivate analytical, inquiring and flexible minds that pose questions, solve problems, construct explanations and reach conclusions  Develop skills to design and perform investigations, evaluate evidence and reach conclusions  Build an awareness of the need to effectively collaborate and communicate  Apply language skills and knowledge in a variety of real life contexts  Develop sensitivity towards the living and non-living environments  Reflect on learning experiences and make informed choices
