MATHEMATICS EXTENDED

Subject Outline Extended Mathematics consists of the Mathematics Standard framework, supplemented by additional topics and skills. This level provides the foundation for students who wish to pursue further studies in Mathematics: for example, Mathematics Higher Level (HL) as part of the IB Diploma Programme or Mathematics Specialist as part of the Queensland Certificate of Education. Extended Mathematics provides greater breadth and depth to the standard Mathematics framework. This course is a highly demanding one, requiring students to study a broad range of mathematical topics through a number of different approaches and to varying degrees of depth. Students wishing to study Mathematics in a less rigorous environment should therefore opt for the Standard Level Mathematics course. This course will have an individualised assessment task which is assessed against MYP criteria. Usually students who have come from Year 9 Extension Mathematics class will select Mathematics Extended, however entry is not restricted to this class. Pathways Mathematics Extended articulates to the following Year 11 and 12 QCCA Senior Programme or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Year 11 2019: • As part of the Queensland Certificate of Education: - Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 - Mathematics Specialist Units 1 and 2

MYP Objectives The aims of the teaching of Mathematics are to encourage and enable students to:  enjoy mathematics, develop curiosity and begin to appreciate its elegance and power  develop an understanding of the principles and nature of mathematics  communicate clearly and confidently in a variety of contexts  develop logical, critical and creative thinking  develop confidence, perseverance, and independence in mathematical thinking and problem-solving  develop powers of generalization and abstraction  apply and transfer skills to a wide range of real-life situations, other areas of knowledge and future developments  appreciate how developments in technology and mathematics have influenced each other  appreciate the moral, social and ethical implications arising from the work of mathematicians and the applications of mathematics  appreciate the international dimension in mathematics through an awareness of the universality of mathematics and its multicultural and historical perspectives  appreciate the contribution of mathematics to other areas of knowledge  develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to pursue further studies in mathematics  develop the ability to reflect critically upon their own work and the work of others.
