Students consider lessons from Rwandan genocide when looking at current countries in crisis. Refugee Stories – mapping a crisis with refugee stories. Understanding current crisis – Rohingya example. Looking at how should Australia respond to the diplomatic, political and international challenges that crises in other countries present? Students consider some key social issues from the perspective of Western journalists. Students explore ethical, diplomatic and cultural challenges involved in international adoption. Students explore and examine articles on voluntourism in India. Students explore the development of labour laws that protect children and compare with current situation in India today. Students consider concepts of speaking up and speaking out and discrimination. What are individual human rights and how have they been violated through history? How have protests changed over time? How have protesters demands or tactics changed over time? Students explore social policies using Michael Moore’s film “Where to Invade Next?” Students compare and contrast social policy issues in different countries. Do all nations have an ethical obligation to work toward preventing genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes?

Nation-States and the Responsibility to Protect Lending help to nation-states can be a challenging and complex process for neighboring nation-states or for international community. Poverty, Vulnerability and Exploitation Understanding perspective and the power and rights of individuals in developing countries is an important factor in considering overall fairness and development. Human Rights and Social Protest Activism can help bring about important social change. Social Policies – Comparative Debate and Change Comparative perspectives on social policy offers insight into cultural identity, independent policy decisions and change.
