Aesthetics Style Genre Audience
Aesthetically, good design is influenced by style and genre and is mindful of impact on the environment.
Globalisation and Sustainability
Students will research the philosophies of designers from a variety of design movements (e.g. The Arts and Crafts Movement. Art Nouveau, Art Deco, The Bauhaus and Contemporary designers such as Marc Newson) working in a range of design fields, looking into the methods and characteristic features of their work to inform an investigation into an environmental issue of personal concern. In addition to this they will gain an understanding of ceramic and sculptural methods by studying these and applying some of them in their own work. Students will look into the advent of Post Modernism, where artists began to revert back to appropriating aspects of previously disregarded modernist art movements. This unit emphasises the importance of retrospection; of looking back on what has happened in the past, to assist in planning how to approach events in the future. As the culmination of their MYP experience, when creating their own work, students will be encouraged to consider contemporary art practices, as well as the media areas, artists, art movements and designers they have studied to this point.
