The colours we are

I have never had a voice Never been able to speak I’ve grown up in an environment Where I am seen as weak I may not be white No blonde hair no blue eyes I may not be like you But why is that such a surprise? The colours we are Should not show our strengths I should not be judged Not based off my skin An ocean where I do not surface A place I do not feel safe A country where everyone belongs But people used to be slaves They tell me society is good Now, society is great So how come I know so many others That suffer under the same hate? It is not one problem (singular) It is many problems (plural) It is not one person’s drowning It is an ocean of suffocation You may not see the problem That doesn’t mean it is not there And take a look again Maybe it’s the side, in which you stand
