YEAR 12 VISUAL ART (OP) COURSE OUTLINE

Tradition and Change: This unit deals with the role of art in questioning the status quo. In this unit students will be required to complete a series of pieces that represent a highly personal response to the concept of ‘Tradition and Change’. This may involve issues that relate to culture, societal norms, gender or religion. Inevitably however, it will also involve consideration of issues related to aesthetics, the state of traditional art forms, notions of appropriate subject matter and methods for depicting this in artwork. In the development of their work they will be required to consider conventional and unconventional approaches to the application of one or more of the following art forms - Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. Their work may also involve the use of less traditional art forms such as - Installation, Performance Art, Digital Art and Video Art.

Constraint and Freedom: This unit deals with the role of art in promoting greater freedom. In this unit students will produce work using print media that will represent a highly personal response to the concept of Constraint and Freedom. Issues considered may be political, physical, social, or religious. Inevitably however, it will also involve consideration of issues related to the technical and ethical constraints traditionally associated with printing. While the concept for the work has changed, the style evident in this work (i.e. the students’ personal aesthetic) should show evidence of a relationship to their earlier work from Semester One. In the development of this work, students will be required to consider conventional and unconventional approaches to the application of print media. They will be required to produce an edition of prints on paper using a traditional printmaking method such as Relief, Stencil or Intaglio. Ultimately they will be required to use the master (block, plate, or stencil) used in this edition of prints as part of a more developed piece. This piece can include the use of photography, digital art and photocopying. It can incorporate the use of mono prints as well as elements of handwork and does not need to form part of a uniform edition. It can involve the combination of a variety of printing processes in a single work. These can be overprinted, collaged, masked, or printed separately, in a more innovative/original manner, incorporating a range of surfaces. Their work may also involve the use of less traditional art forms such as - Installation, Performance Art, Digital Art and Video Art.

Learning experiences each semester will involve students in research, development and resolution of ideas related to their selected focus.
