Starlight Express - Musical Programme 2023

This year’s Senior Musical is set to take you on the ride of your life.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera, Starlight Express, brings to the stage one of the most creative places to be, a child’s imagination. What better place to explore what could and might be without being fettered by the constraints of the grown-up world. Based loosely on the fairy tale of Cinderella, the messages that come from this story are brought to life on the stage. We will witness the power of self-belief, perseverance, and friendship. It showcases the importance of believing in oneself and never giving up on one’s dreams, no matter how difficult the journey maybe. These attributes have also brought our students and staff together to create this production full of all its twists and turns as the trains rival one and another through the course of the show. On seeing the show, I am sure it is obvious that there are many facets in bringing this production to life. Cast and crew have collaborated to create this imagining of the show. This project showcases how teamwork brings together the ultimate product. We applaud both the skill set and commitment of our staff and the enthusiasm and talents of our students. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s original premise of the show was to introduce live theatre to young audiences and the young at heart. As time moves forward, the show is meant to change, with Lloyd Webber stating, ‘Starlight Express by its nature has to change’. I am sure you will agree that justice has been done. So, I invite you to come with me and step into this wondrous world. The wheels have been set in motion, so follow all instructions from Control, keep your safety googles handy, remain seated with your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside your carriage and prepare for the Championship race! Mr Craig Bassingthwaighte

Enter a world of speed and spectacle… the trip of a lifetime! Experience the imagination of a child! After a slight derailment in 2020, Starlight Express has rolled onto our stage for our 2023 musical. Our cast and crew have been working tirelessly to bring this production to life, and their hard work and dedication will shine through like the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’. Thank-you to our headmaster, Mr Craig Bassingthwaighte and the College Leadership Team, for having the foresight to support the work in our theatre to avail our students of the best possible experiences. The lessons that the young steam-train Rusty learns throughout the show regarding friendship and self-belief will be ones that our young cast take with them into their futures and will serve them well. Mrs Sue Roberts

Starlight Express tells the story of a group of trains who come to life and compete in a race to become the fastest train in the world. The story takes place in a child’s (Control’s) imagination where the trains take on human-like personalities. Rusty, a young steam engine dreams of winning the race, however, he faces tough competition from other trains, including the arrogant Diesel and the powerful Electra. Being young and inexperienced, Rusty is not taken seriously by the other trains. He falls for a first-class coach named Pearl, who is also pursued by the flashy Greaseball. Pearl is drawn to Rusty’s kind and gentle nature, but she is torn between her feelings for him and her desire for a more glamorous life as promised by Greaseball. As the races progress, Rusty learns important lessons about friendship, perseverance, and self belief. He is helped along the way by his friends, including the experienced and wise Poppa, who encourages Rusty to believe in himself and his abilities. The races are full of excitement and drama, with each train using their unique skills and strengths to try and win. Rusty faces many challenges along the way, including a confrontation with the menacing Diesel, but he never gives up on his dream. In the end, Rusty emerges as the winner, proving to himself and others that he is capable of great things. He is reunited with Pearl, who realizes that true love is about more than just glamour and appearances. With its inspiring message about the power of self-belief and the importance of friendship, Starlight Express is a beloved classic of musical theatre.
