Somerset lifetimes 2019 Semester 1

Triathlon SOMERSET SPORT –

Continuing Somerset’s tradition, offering a range of opportunities to our College community, this year we launched our Triathlon Club. We introduced Glauber Scattolini Correa, a Brazilian Triathlon and Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Coach, to further develop and research high performance endurance training. Glauber recently completed his Masters in Sports Science and later this year will begin his PhD on alternative interventions in altitude training, acclimatisation for enhanced sea-level performance. Glauber is currently responsible for the Spartans Club coaching as well as 12 other endurance athletes here and overseas. Among them, two are Olympic level para-triathletes, one eighth in PTWC (wheel-chair) world rankings and a second one 53 rd in PTVI (visually impaired) world rankings and a Brazilian top five female national trail runner. He also manages the S&C programme for an international-level, Australian dressage athlete who is also attempting to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

The Triathlon programme began with the intention of offering students a full year endurance training opportunity in one of Australia’s passions, triathlon. The initial idea was to attract students and parents to participate for the first time in triathlon races and hopefully maintain the training along the year. We set up a nine-week challenge for Kingscliff and Gold Coast Triathlons and hoped for the best, as every beginning is risky and takes a huge effort from all the ones involved. The first five months have been impressive with more and more students joining each month. We have around 25 athletes who actively participate in regular training sessions and races. We competed at three races in the first semester and ended our participation – beautifully suited in custom uniforms – with 50 percent of our athletes reaching podium finishes. Somerset officially became a Club Squad at the start of the season. We welcome adults within the Somerset Community to join the Club (Parents and Alumni). The coaching programme follows a five phase performance ladder in which the athletes develop all their capabilities. A main coaching objective is to present a healthy lifestyle within the sports environment, where dedication and resilience is rewarded with personal satisfaction. Eventually over the next two to three years, it is hoped a small group who grow in performance will decide to continue and become national representatives.
