Out West Programme 2022

Following a visit by children from the Longreach School of Distance Education (LSODE) to Storyfest’s cornerstone event, our annual writer’s festival on the Gold Coast, a plan was hatched to bring to life Storyfest Out West and provide similar activations to children from the Central West region. Teachers and students from LSODE were captivated by the interactions with authors and have been the driving force behind this event. We are forever grateful to Richard and Marisse Kinnon from Outback Pioneers who did not hesitate to support this venture and join with us in the journey of bringing storytellers to Longreach. To the many families who have donated to our fundraising campaign to Storyfest Out West a reality, your contribution and commitment to this venture for our friends from the bush, is unparalleled. We sincerely thank each of you for making this happen, particular mention to the Talbot, Clark and Hunt families. To my Board, I sincerely thank you for your continued support. Tayla, Gabriella and Casey, amazing young women whose dedication to our cause is truly admirable. I’m honoured to work with each of you! In a time where many arts organisations have struggled to secure funding, to be able to deliver on our strategic mission to expose more children to the wonders of reading, leaves us with newfound energy to ensure the sustainability of the arts in Queensland and more specifically, connecting disadvantaged children with books and authors. Forging ahead with our 3-year strategic plan, which includes delivering Storyfest Out West in Longreach; joining with master storyteller - Fiona McIntosh to bring her Commercial Fiction Masterclass to Queensland; and securing the first Short Story Dispenser into Queensland which will allow young writers to have their work published, these wonderful steps towards building on literary activities throughout our State. To enable us to deliver on our strategic plans, we will host our inaugural Annual Giving on Wednesday 1 June – we ask you to take a minute and make a donation, which helps us to continue to deliver these sensational literacy programmes to Queensland! These are exciting times and I encourage you to come along on the journey of storytelling with us!

Somerset Storyfest acknowledges the Iningai, Malintji and Kuunkari peoples as traditional owners of the land on which this Festival operates. We pay respect to elders past, present and future and value the traditions, cultures and aspirations of the First Australians of this land. We acknowledge and hold in great significance the valuable contribution that traditional owners have made and continue to make within the Longreach region communities.
