My Santiago
Daring to Grow
Today, whilst in the garden, Sweeping debris: The residue of a storm, I happened to notice, Out of the corner of my eye, A plant!
Sprung from seed, Carried on some flight of wind, Or passing bird. Stark, against the vast expanse of concrete, Strident in its solitude, A lone, brave shape! Friendless, yet healthy, Unobtrusive through necessity. Prey to passing dogs and obsessional gardeners.
There it was, Growing steadily, Through a crack! Daring to thrive, where nothing should!
Acting on impulse, I mindlessly stooped
To pull it out, Then stopped! Suddenly, reluctant to end its fight -
an ambitious quest for survival
Seeing in its tenuous life, A similarity with my own. Now actively curious, Wondering, conjecturing, What might it be? Will it survive?
