Mamma Mia - Senior Musical Programme

SOMERSETCOLLEGE Production of

MUSIC AND LYRICS BY BENNY ANDERSSON BJÖRN ULVAEUS AND SOME SONGS WITH STIG ANDERSON

HEADMASTER’S WELCOME This year’s Senior Musical brings us to the sunny climes of the Greek Islands. What a welcome change to travel abroad, and even better, no rain is forecast! The music of ABBA has become synonymous with a feel-good sound and has had lasting power for over four decades. I am sure everyone in the audience is familiar with several (if not many) of their songs which makes their music the perfect vehicle for this year’s production, Mamma Mia! The show has brought our students and staff together in a production full of laughs and good times. Contrasting the dreams and aspirations of a 70’s girl and a 90’s girl through the story-telling magic of the songs of ABBA, we meet Donna, a feisty independent single-parent, and her twenty-year old daughter who have differing approaches to life. Is that any different to what is faced in many households today? And what about the men in their lives? It is clear from what we see on the stage that there are many facets to creating this magic. Cast and crew have worked together to transport you to another place and another time. This project showcases how teamwork brings together the ultimate product. We applaud both the skill and commitment of our staff and the enthusiasm and talents of our students.

Many people from around the globe have fallen in love with the characters, the enchanting story and ABBA’s timeless music which makes Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show! This sunny, funny, international smash hit sensation unfolds on a Greek island paradise when on the eve of her wedding, a young woman’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited twenty years ago. The plot has many twists and turns as Sophie tries to unravel the mystery of her father’s identity. The audience will be swept up in the excitement of the upcoming nuptials as well as caught up in the intrigue. Toes will be kept tapping as the ABBA hits unfold one by one throughout the show.

This year has seen the stage in the theatre change from a wonderful shade of green to the iridescent blue, reminiscent of the Aegean Sea. Our cast and crew have been busily working to present this show to you, our audience. During our production, you will be able to see our theatre in full flight, with this show being the perfect vehicle to display these attributes. Thank-you to our headmaster, Mr Craig Bassingthwaighte and the College Leadership Team, for having the foresight to support the work in our theatre to avail our students of the best possible experiences. The experience of working together in a show from its very beginning to the culmination you see tonight is something that the students will take with them forever and the skills they have learnt will enhance their futures. As Henry Ford said ‘Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success’ .

Let us together celebrate this success.
