E scape from P ompeii Everyone fell silent. Mt Vesuvius was beginning to erupt. Dion’s heart stopped for a second. In a few moments, Pompeii was going to be destroyed. Tranio knew he had to escape before Mt Vesuvius destroys Pompeii. The ground began to grumble and the citizens began to stumble. Tranio knew the only way of escaping was to find an underground shelter. Therefore, Tranio’s first idea was to find Livia so he pushed through the crowded streets with Dion following closely behind. After a few minutes, they arrived at the bakery but Livia was not there. Tranio knew Livia was in the crowd trying to escape. Tranio’s second idea was to run through the crowded streets and find a shelter so, they starting running again. Then Tranio bumped into a boy names Marcus. However, when he looked behind, Dion was not there. Tranio knew he had to keep moving without Dion. Tranio followed Marcus through the crowded streets and finally got to the underground passage. The shelter was in Marcus home so Marcus got some bread and a bucket of water. It seemed like Marcus prepared for this eruption a long time ago. Out on the streets Tranio heard people screaming, babies crying and dogs barking in terror. Back in the house, Marcus put everything in a basket and they headed through the tunnel. The tunnel was hot and steamy but Tranio knew he had to keep walking. Tranio’s eyes started to burn and his skin turned rosy red. Then Marcus handed Tranio a bit of water and said. “This might make you feel better.” Suddenly Tranio and Marcus heard a big loud roar from Mt Vesuvius. Marcus and Tranio started to crawl a bit faster then suddenly, Marcus stopped. “Why did you stop?” Asked Tranio. “If we go deeper it will get hotter and hotter,” replied Marcus. Then Tranio whispered, “Rumble down, tumble down, great city wall, feel the ground grumble the citizens stumble, when the earth shakes and rumble down, tumble down. However, Tranio and Marcus did not laugh this time they just kept walking. Then Tranio and Marcus stopped to sleep. The next morning, Tranio woke up and asked Marcus. “Can we go back up now?” “Yes,” replied Marcus. Therefore, Tranio started to walk and walk until they reached the surface. However, when he reached the surface the only thing he could see was ash. Then a tear rolled down Tranio’s dark brown eyes. Then Tranio stared deeply at Mt Vesuvius. A few years went by and no one knew about Pompeii. The whole city was buried alive and a whole new city was built on top of Pompeii. The ‘Gentle Mountain’ was not so gentle after all.
