Celebration of Entrepreneurship Programme 2022

| The Chairperson

Festivals are part of the fabric of Somerset College. For over 30 years, the College has been a leader in literature and performance festivals through Storyfest and the Somerset Festival for Young Performers. As the first independent coeducational school on the Gold Coast, Somerset has been entrepreneurial since it was founded. That spirit of collaboration, problem solving and creative thinking was evident in every educational and commercial step we have taken over the past 37 years. We are a proud Gold Coast institution. In 2022, it is time for our sixth Celebration of Entrepreneurship! Through this initiative, the College will again empower and promote the culture of entrepreneurship for which the Gold Coast is famous. I thank the College Board and my College Leadership Team for their hard work and passion to make the Festival happen! 2022 has been a challenge, and it is the entrepreneurial mindset that will allow the Gold Coast and Somerset to overcome our current economic and health challenges and flourish into the future. We hope you enjoy the Celebration of Entrepreneurship. We are excited to welcome you to Somerset College and we are sure you will enjoy the variety of talented entrepreneurs who have generously given their time to the Gold Coast community. Together, we will make the world a better place, one startling idea at a time. Craig Bassingthwaighte Headmaster Somerset College welcome | The Headmaster

Since 2017, the Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship has developed a reputation as the premier youth entrepreneurship festival in Australia. During this 6-year period, the Festival has evolved and grown rapidly, yet we still maintain our focus on connecting the problem solvers, creative thinkers and innovators to empower and promote entrepreneurship on the Gold Coast and in Queensland. Emerging research based on “over 20 billion hours of work completed by 12 million Australians” by the Foundation For Young Australians validates the explicit teaching of the entrepreneurial mindset in schools. In summary, students need the transferable 21st century entrepreneurial skills of creativity, collaboration and communication because: • 70% of young people under the age of 35 want flexibility in their work and the ability to freelance, rather than be tied to an employer • Since 2016, there has been a 340% increase in the number of people in Australia obtaining work in the ‘gig’ economy, with citizens aged 18 to 35 making up half of this number. • 8 out of 10 under 35’s believe in ‘self as enterprise’ careers • Young people completing school in 2022 are expected to have 17 different jobs in 5 different industries during their working life. Thank you once again to our supporters and sponsors who are acknowledged in this Festival Guide! Your generous support has made it possible to provide complimentary tickets to the Festival in 2022. Please tell all your friends and family about our sponsors and supporters so that we can continue to keep Festival tickets free in the future. Thank you for visiting Somerset College and attending the Celebration of Entrepreneurship. We welcome you warmly and look forward to sharing the Festival with you over the next 2 days!
