APS TEAM SELECTION POLICY: SWIMMING

The Somerset House Swimming Carnival is not an APS “selection trial”. In each event, the top 2 place-getters do not automatically qualify for the Somerset APS Swimming Team. Please note that we ask all parents/caregivers to remember and respect the fact that Somerset College Swimming coaches and the Director of Sport select the APS team based on many factors. Please accept that we are choosing a team based on what is fair and in the best interest of all students and the entire team. The Swimming coaches and Director of Sport maintain the right to make all selections, based on history of performance, recent form in class and practices as well as the “best fit” for the team. A squad will be selected and the final team announced closer to the APS Swimming Carnival. Students will not be considered for too many events due to injury/fatigue/ performance concerns. Absent students with legitimate excuses will not be disadvantaged in selection. Reserves are reminded to bring their uniform on the day of competition, as it is likely that a number of reserves will be called upon to compete. Reserves may attend all day with the team or go to class, from which they will be sought if required. Educational research shows that it is best for children’s sporting, emotional, and personal development if parents/caregivers accept and support coaches in these selections. Boys and girls respond better to any selection disappointment when parent/caregivers encourage them to enjoy their chosen sport, relish being part of a team environment and do their best. Any students not selected in the APS team are welcome to continue training with the team on a daily basis.
