UNIFORM

Handbook

The College uniform is the most visible symbol of identity for students at Somerset College. It is expected all students take pride in their appearance and ensure their uniform is well- fitted, clean, neat and worn in a dignified and respectful manner during the school day. The Uniform Handbook has been designed to help students and parents/caregivers understand how to wear the uniform correctly. It explains our uniform policy and provides details about the College Retail Centre. The Handbook is divided into the following sections: ELP (Early Learning Precinct), Junior School and Senior School. Each section details the correct uniform options for both winter and summer, formal and P.E. activities. notifications about formal uniform requirements. Additionally, you will also be notified through Schoolbox, when students are exempt from wearing the College uniform (for example camps, casual dress days). On these occasions it is still expected students be neat and take pride in their appearance. On occasions (for example excursions, Scholars’ Day or class photos) the College will send

Somerset Retail is located on the third floor of the Ray Building.

Entrance to the Somerset Retail car park is via Somerset Drive, through the Wyangan Gate and then follow the signs to Retail.

Normal Term Time Trading Hours Monday to Friday 7.30am to 4.30pm Trading Hours during the school holidays are advertised on Schoolbox.

Parents and Students must make individual appointments if you require assistance purchasing the uniform.

The Retail Centre accepts Cash, MasterCard, Visa, AMEX and EFTPOS from parents and students must use their Student Smart Card for all purchases as the College is a cashless environment.

ACCESSORIES

HATS JUNIOR SCHOOL AND SENIOR SCHOOL

Students must wear hats when they are outside. Junior School students are required to wear the official navy blue College bucket hat. For an additional small fee, students can have their name embroided on the rim of the bucket hats at the parent/caregiver’s request. Senior School students are encouraged to wear a hat with the option of the navy blue sports cap. House caps are only to be worn with sports uniforms and are encouraged on carnival days and House events. Bucket hats are also available in House colours. No other hats or caps are to be worn with the College uniform. Students who do not have a hat or cap must stay out of the sun.

SCHOOL BAGS

The bottle green College backpack is available in three sizes – small, medium and large. We also have a backpack with wheels available in two sizes for Junior School students. There are two sizes available in the College sports bags - small and large. This item is compulsory. For students in Years 7 to 12 a black College satchel is available as an optional item. All bags are endorsed by the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and the Chiropractors Association of Australia (CAA).

TIES

JUNIOR SCHOOL (YEAR 3 TO YEAR 6) Boys are required to wear the College tie in Terms Two and Three every Monday. SENIOR SCHOOL (YEAR 7 TO YEAR 9) Boys are required to wear the College tie in Terms Two and Three every Tuesday. SENIOR SCHOOL (YEAR 10 TO YEAR 11) Boys are limited to either the College tie or relevant House tie, unless they have been awarded a Colour or Honours tie. SENIOR SCHOOL (YEAR 12) Boys are limited to either their Year 12 Graduating Stag tie or relevant House tie unless they have been awarded a Colour or Honours tie. Ties are to be worn in Terms Two and Three with the winter uniform. Whenever a tie is worn, the top shirt button must be fastened and the tie done up.

PRE-PREP and PREP

PRE-PREP AND PREP Students wear a short-sleeve polo shirt in all the combined House colours (Pre-Prep) and green (Prep) with the College crest and navy blue, elasticised-waist/ sports shorts. Students must wear enclosed, velcro sports shoes with College branded socks. All students must wear the College navy bucket hat for all outdoor play and activities. WINTER (OPTIONAL) Pre-Prep and Prep students can wear a long sleeve fleece jumper in navy blue with the College

crest. Students can wear either the navy blue, fleece track pants or the shorts. Sports shoes with College branded socks and bucket hats are worn throughout the year.

EYC

YEAR 1 and YEAR 2

In cooler months, Year 1 and 2 students can wear a long-sleeve fleece jumper in navy blue with the College crest, over the short-sleeve polo shirt. Students can wear navy blue track pants but have the option to wear the navy blue summer shorts with fleece jumpers. Students continue wearing sports shoes with College branded socks and bucket hat throughout the year.* Students must wear enclosed, velcro sports shoes with College branded socks. All students must wear the College navy bucket hat for all outdoor play and activities. YEAR 1 & 2 Students wear a short-sleeve polo shirt in navy and green with the College crest and navy blue, elasticised-waist/ sports shorts.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

YEAR 3 to YEAR 6

DAY UNIFORM 01 | Option 1 - Year 3 to 6 Day Uniform -

Students wear a tartan knee-length dress with College ankle socks and black lace–up shoes. 02 | Option 2 - Year 3 to 6 Day Uniform Students wear a short-sleeve, white button-up shirt with the College crest, navy blue, front pleated shorts, a belt, long socks and black lace–up shoes. 03 | Option 3 Year 3 to 6 Day Uniform Students wear a tartan knee-length skirt with a white, navy trimmed shirt, College ankle socks and black lace–up shoes. FORMAL UNIFORM 04 | Option 1 - Year 3 to 6 Formal Uniform Students wear a bottle green jumper with the College crest, over the tartan school dress, navy tights and black lace-up shoes. 05 | Option 2 - Year 3 to 6 Formal Uniform Students wear a white, button-up long sleeve shirt with a College crest and a College tie. Students continue to wear the navy blue shorts with long socks and black shoes. The bottle green jumper can also be worn in cooler months. Option 3 - On cooler days, students may wear long, navy blue trousers.

All students must wear the College navy bucket hat throughout the year.

COLLEGE

COLLEGE UNIFORM

Personal Grooming A high standard of personal dress and grooming is required at all times. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their standards of grooming, parents/caregivers are expected to send students to school appropriately groomed. Shoes are to be kept clean. Hair is to be kept neat and tidy. Extreme hairstyling, including shaving of the head, dyeing or bleaching of hair, is not permitted. Significant contrasts in length of hair are not permitted.

Articles of jewellery are not permitted to be worn with the College uniform. Students who wish to wear jewellery of significant religious significance may do so, provided it is concealed under the uniform. Watches and medical identification bracelets may be worn. Girls with pierced ears are permitted to wear one pair of plain studs. Students are permitted to wear sunglasses while at school; however, they should not be outrageous in style or worn in the classroom. Consequences Any breaches will be dealt with in line with the College behaviour code.

SPORTS

SPORTS UNIFORM WHOLE COLLEGE Sports APS Uniform

The Sports uniform consists of a white and solid navy blue and emerald green block polo shirt, navy blue shorts and Spartan branded sports socks, sneakers and a navy blue sports cap (Senior School only) or bucket hat (see Accessories, page 4). Sports House Uniform Students in Years 3 to 12 must wear their relevant House shirt on days such as Inter-House Swimming and Athletics and Cross Country carnivals, for House activity days, or as directed by Heads of House. Options of either a House or regular bucket hat for Junior School, with House caps available in Senior School. Senior School

Students in Years 7 to 12 must arrive at the College in Day or Formal uniform and change into their Sports uniform.

SWIMMING

SWIMMING JUNIOR SCHOOL

Pre–Prep Students are encouraged to wear their personal swimmers. Prep to Year 2 Students must wear the swim pants in navy blue with bottle green trim and the matching navy blue and bottle green-sleeve rash shirt. Year 3 to 6 Option 1 – Students wear the navy blue nix with bottle green side banding in either style (plain or sublimated) with the matching navy blue, bottle green-sleeve rash shirt. Option 2 – Students wear the navy blue swimsuit with bottle green trim in either style (plain or sublimated) with the matching navy blue, bottle green-sleeve rash shirt.

SWIMMING SENIOR SCHOOL

Years 7 to 12 Option 1 – Students wear the navy blue nix with bottle green side banding in either style (plain or sublimated). Option 2 – Students wear the navy blue swim suit with bottle green trim in either style (plain or sublimated). The rash shirt is an optional item. House Swim Caps House Swim Caps to be worn during swimming lessons (Pre-Prep to Year 5) and Inter-House carnivals.

SENIOR SCHOOL

YEAR 7 to YEAR 9

Day Uniform 01 | Option 1 - Students wear a short-sleeve white blouse, a bottle green tree and blue bird and a tartan knee length skirt with College socks. 02 | Option 2 - Students wear a short-sleeve white shirt with a Somerset Crest, navy shorts, a belt and knee length socks. Formal Uniform 03 | Option 1 - Students wear a bottle green jumper with the College crest over the short sleeve, white blouse and tartan skirt. Students must wear navy blue hosiery (minimum 40 denier) on days when formal uniform is required and as an option on cooler days. 04 | Option 2 - Students wear a bottle green jumper with the College crest over a long sleeve College Crest and tie. Students wear navy blue long trousers with belt loop and black leather belt.

All options require students to wear black leather lace-up shoes (able to be polished).

SENIOR SCHOOL

YEAR 10 to YEAR 12

Day Uniform 01 | Option 1 - Students wear a short-sleeve white blouse with a bottle green tree and blue bird, a navy blue knee-length skirt, plain white ankle socks with black leather lace–up or court shoes. 02 | Option 2 - Students wear a short-sleeve white and blue striped shirt (tucked in) with the small bird and tree crest, navy blue shorts with belt loop and black leather belt, long socks with black leather lace-up shoes. Formal Uniform 03 | Option 1 - Students wear a compulsory blazer (College or honours) over the short sleeve summer blouse. Students continue to wear the navy summer skirt and must wear navy blue hosiery (minimum 40 denier) when formal uniform is required. 04 | Option 2 - Students wear a long-sleeve white shirt (tucked in) with the small bird and tree crest, navy blue long trousers with a belt loop and black leather belt. Students wear a compulsory blazer (College or honours) with a College tie. 05 | Option 3 - Students wear a compulsory blazer (College or honours) over the short sleeve summer blouse, navy blue long trousers with a belt loop and black leather belt.

SENIOR SCHOOL

YEAR 10 to YEAR 12

Blazer The College blazer is Navy blue, bottle green and silver stripes. The College blazer is compulsory for all Senior students during Terms Two and Three. The blazer must be worn to and from the College each day and at formal occasions. Ties are essential for boys, when wearing the blazer. Honour Blazer The Honour blazer is navy blue and bottle green with red, yellow and royal blue stripes. Honour Students receive this award for their service and leadership roles across the school. Students can also purchase an honour tie and badge.

OCCASIONS SENIOR SCHOOL

Formal/Special Occassions The Blazer and formal uniforms must be worn at all formal events.

Every Monday students in Years 7 to 9 during Term Two and Term Three must wear their formal uniform. Years 10 to 12 students must wear formal uniform every day during Term Two and Term Three. School Excursions Will be advised the College prior to the excursion. School Chapel Term One – Day Uniform Casual Clothes Day The usual standards of grooming and appearance are expected. Open foot shoes, tank tops and beachwear are not acceptable.

The College uniform is to be worn correctly at all times while on College grounds.

Blazer The blazer is to be worn when travelling to and from the College in Terms Two and Three. All blazers should be labelled with the student’s name and when removed at the College, the blazer should be locked in the student’s locker. Ties In Winter, ties are always worn to and from the College. The College tie should be worn when representing the College at events and fixtures. Students can choose to wear any tie from the College range. Year 12 students are given an option to receive a College stag tie or a College silver graduating ring at the start of Term One at the Investiture Dinner. Whenever the tie is worn, the top shirt button must be fastened and the tie done up. Shirts Long-sleeve shirts are to be buttoned up at the cuffs or neatly rolled to the elbow. The Bird and Bush have College cufflinks available for students who wish to wear this item. All shirts are to be tucked in to either shorts or trousers. Girls blouses are not required to be tucked in. Personal Grooming A high standard of personal dress and grooming is required at all times.
