In conclusion, Jacob Collier has created a successful individualistic cover of Close to You . Although there are similarities to the original in relation to structure and melodic line, Collier was able to successfully create his own distinct version by manipulating the musical elements such as harmony, timbre and rhythm, with particular significance in the treatment of the introduction, accompaniment, stylistic elements and the use of instrumentation. Through this manipulation, the song has developed from what was initially a soft rock song with a subtle jazz feel through its use of swing rhythm and trumpet to a rhythmically and harmonically complex challenging song. However, considering all factors it cannot be said that it is his own song. The main idea of the Close to You was still based on the Carpenter’s version. However, Collier has successfully stamped his own style on this piece of rock history.
