As we enter the first line of the first verse, the chord progression in the Carpenter’s version is Cadd 9 - Bsus 4 – B - Bm 7 - Em 7 - Em (shown in figure 5).
The resting on the minor chord (E minor being the relative of the tonic G major) emphasises the apprehension communicated in the lyrics. The second line of the lyrics reverts to the vacillating C/C 9 , reminiscent of the introduction until resolving to an added note chord of the tonic – Gmaj 9 .
