Personal and Cultural Expression
Students will look into the early Modernist Art Movements and the concept of being Avant – garde , of ‘breaking new ground’.

They will discover how Artists started to give greater emphasis to communicating their thoughts and emotions, rather than just depicting what they could see. They will recognise the importance of innovation and originality as a factor used to define and recognise “High Art” during this period. They will also develop knowledge of drawing and painting media and techniques. Students will become aware of the impact of various forms of print media, both in the past and the present, not only in reflecting events and views of people at the time they are produced, but also in influencing events and opinions. They will look at the influence of Guttenberg’s printing press, the Pop Art and Op Art movements in the 1960s and 70s and contemporary street artists such as Banksy. In addition to this they will gain an understanding of printmaking processes and techniques, by studying these and applying some of them in their own work
